What is Uber Green?

Uber Green is Uber’s sustainable rideshare option that allows riders to book a 100% electric or hybrid vehicle. It was launched by the ride-hailing company in 2020 as part of its broader plan to become a zero-emission platform by 2040.

Every Uber Green ride is estimated to emit up to 44% fewer carbon emissions than your standard Uber trip. To encourage drivers to make a switch to green technology and support their continued use of greener vehicle alternatives, the company incentivizes them monetarily. The company surcharges $1 from the rider and the driver receives $0.50 for every Uber Green trip completed.

Apart from the extra pay, drivers owning fully electric vehicles may also be eligible for Uber’s Zero Emissions incentive — an extra $1 incentive per trip (accessibility of the same is limited to certain specific geographic locations only).

Is the procedure to book this ride variant different from a standard Uber ride?

No. Reserving an Uber Green ride requires the rider to follow the same steps as booking their standard ride. After entering the pickup and destination addresses, opt for “Uber Green” on the bottom of your app screen to book it.

However, you must note that this facility is available in select cities only, and ride availability is limited outside of specific downtown locations.

Can I pre-schedule this ride option?

Like most ridesharing alternatives, Uber Green also comes with a “Schedule for Later” feature. You can check the availability of the same by visiting the company’s website or application.

To pre-schedule your ride, take the following steps:

  1. Open the Uber application
  2. On the homepage, locate the “Enter pick-up point” option and tap the ‘clock’ sign next to it
  3. From the drop-down, tap “Schedule a trip”
  4. Select time date and time for the trip
  5. Tap “Set pick-up time”
  6. Then enter your pick-up address and drop-off destination
  7. Proceed by selecting “Uber Green” from the list of ride options
  8. Tap the scheduling prompt at the bottom of the screen to confirm

You can reserve a ride up to 30 days prior to the trip. Moreover, the feature is applicable across most of Uber’s ride alternatives. However, the availability of the same is subject to change due to multiple factors, including the city of operations.

When I request a trip, which car can I expect?

The availability of the vehicle varies by location. When requesting a trip, you should expect to ride in either battery electric vehicles, Uber hybrid electric vehicles, or plug-in hybrids. Some of the vehicle models that are currently being used for the same are Toyota Camry, Nissan Leaf, Rav4 Hybrid, Honda Accord Hybrid, and Tesla models among others.

What benefits do I receive as a rider for selecting Uber Green?

By requesting a trip, you are contributing to clean and green mobility by paying just $1 more than a standard Uber ride. So, you support Uber’s zero-emission commitment while opting for the more sustainable ride option. For Uber One members, there exists a 10% discount on trips. Moreover, you can earn additional Uber Rewards points for every “Green” trip taken.
